"Would rather" và "Had better"
I. Would rather
1. Trường hợp có thật
+ Hiện tại
| SUBJECT + WOULD RATHER + (NOT) + VERB (without TO) |
Ví dụ:
- I would rather go to class tomorrow than today.
- Mary would rather not stay home tonight.
+ Quá khứ
| SUBJECT + WOULD RATHER + (NOT) + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE |
Ví dụ:
- I would rather have gone to class yesterday than today.
- Mary would rather not have stayed home last tonight.
2. Trường hợp giả định:
+ Trường hợp có thể xảy ra ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai.
| SUBJECT 1 + WOULD RATHER THAT + SUBJECT 2 + (NOT) + VERB (without TO) |
Ví dụ:
- I would rather that you call me tomorrow.
- I would rather that he not take this train.
+ Trường hợp không có thật ở hiện tại.
| SUBJECT 1 + WOULD RATHER THAT + SUBJECT 2 + VERB (Simple past) |
(Nếu là BE thì dùng were cho tất cả các ngôi)
Ví dụ:
- I would rather that my friend worked in the same office as I do.
- I would rather that it were winter now.
+ Trường hợp không có thật ở quá khứ.

Ví dụ:
- I would rather that Peter had left yesterday.
- Tom would rather that Mary had not gone to class yesterday.
II. Had better
+ had better + verb (without To): nên, tốt hơn là... (hiện tại)
Ví dụ:
- You had better go to the doctor's.
- You had better not read this book.
+ had better trong lời nói gián tiếp (indirect speech)
Ví dụ:
- He said, "I'd better have a bath."
-> He said (that) he'd better have a bath.
- He said, "You'd better take the course."
-> He said (that) I'd better take the course.
+ had better + have + past participle: lẽ ra đã nên... (quá khứ)
Ví dụ:
- I had better have gone to see her but I didn't.
