Cách rút gọn mệnh đề
Ta có thể rút gọn mệnh đề bằng cách:
I. BỎ ĐẠI TỪ LIÊN HỆ + BE TRONG MỆNH ĐỀ KHÔNG GIỚI HẠN (NON-RESTRICTIVE CLAUSE)
Ví dụ:
- Mr. Nam, who is a professor, is travelling in Europe this year.
-> Mr. Nam, a professor, is travelling in Europe this year.
II. BỎ ĐẠI TỪ LIÊN HỆ + BE TRONG CẤU TRÚC TIẾP DIỄN TRONG MỆNH ĐỀ GIỚI HẠN (RESTRICTIVE CLAUSE)
Ví dụ:
- The man who is talking with John is a director.
-> The man talking with John is a director.
- The girl who is running down the street is my daughter.
-> The girl running down the street is my daughter.
III. BỎ ĐẠI TỪ LIÊN HỆ + BE TRƯỚC CỤM TỪ BẮT ĐẦU BẰNG GIỚI TỪ TRONG MỆNH ĐỀ GIỚI HẠN (RESTRICTIVE CLAUSE)
Ví dụ:
- The book that is on the table is mine.
-> The book on the table is mine.
- The glass which is on the counter contains wine.
-> The glass on the counter contains wine.
IV. BỎ ĐẠI TỪ LIÊN HỆ VÀ ĐỔI VERB THÀNH VERB(ING)
Ví dụ:
- I live in a large room which overlooks the garden.
-> I live in a large room overlooking the garden.
V. BỎ ĐẠI TỪ LIÊN HỆ + BE CÙNG BẤT CỨ TRỢ ĐỘNG TỪ NÀO KHÁC
Ví dụ:
- None of the people who have been invited to the party can come.
-> None of the people invited to the party can come.
- The man who was injured in the accident was taken to hospital.
-> The man injured in the accident was taken to hospital.
